Who and what is the Shadyside Action Coalition?

The Shadyside Action Coalition is a not-for-profit community-based organization that helps residents of this dynamic East End neighborhood with various zoning, quality of life and public safety issues.

Founded by residents and clergy in 1973, the Shadyside Action Coalition is a widely respected community organization in the city of Pittsburgh. The Coalition serves as a community resource in many areas including: neighborhood safety, planning and zoning, parking and transportation, and neighborhood development projects.  The annual Shadyside House Tour is the group’s annual fundraiser.   Funds raised are used to cover legal fees incurred while researching and negotiating issues on behalf of the Shadyside community, mailing costs to publicize hearings, and or public meetings regarding issues impacting the community, and general administration of the organization. The Coalition also makes charitable contributions to worthy neighborhood organizations on regular basis.

These are just a few of the projects the group is involved with on an ongoing basis:
a.    organization and facilitation of a neighborhood-wide forum held each spring on a pertinent topic (i.e. Mayoral Candidates Debate held in May 2005; Baum-Centre Corridor Update held in May 2006;  Large Scale Development Updates 2007 etc.)
b.    development and maintenance of an informational website:  www.shadysideaction.org
c.    development and distribution of an informational quarterly newsletter
d.    participation in research and strategy development sessions with surrounding neighborhood groups regarding large issues with neighborhood wide impact (Bakery Row initiative on Penn Avenue)
e.    participation in annual Earth Day activities with year long follow-up
f.    development and distribution of a Welcome Packet for residents new to the neighborhood
Our commitment to the neighborhood has influenced crucial decision-making on projects such as: the development of the Village of Shadyside, the East Busway stop in Shadyside, the Bellefonte Street parking garage, and both the Giant Eagle store and the Winchester-Thurston School expansion projects.  The group has been actively involved in both the Baum Centre Corridor planning and oversight and the Bakery Row collaborative community planning.

The Board is comprised of volunteers who donate their time to helping our neighborhood. Call,      e-mail or write us to become a member or if you wish to be on an upcoming meeting agenda. All Shadyside residents are most welcome to join as voting members.  Non Shadyside residents are welcome to join as patrons, or non-voting members.   The Shadyside Action Coalition can be reached via email at info@shadysideaction.org or by phone at 412 361-3771.

By becoming a member of the Shadyside Action Coalition, you will belong to an organization that is committed to maintaining the high standard of living associated with the Shadyside neighborhood. You will also be invited to participate in regular meetings and discuss and help resolve issues that may affect you directly.
